Nature Writing

Grade Level: Middle School; 5-8th grade

In this creative writing workshop, we will discuss different ways of looking at and interacting with the outside world, techniques for writing about nature, and share our work with each other during workshops. Each class meeting, we will take time to explore outside and go for a hike together as a class. We will also learn how to identify common birds, trees, and flora during our hikes. Please come prepared with appropriate shoes, a water bottle, a notebook, and a sense of adventure!

About: Ari Mokdad

Ari L. Mokdad is a Detroit-born choreographer, creative writer, and passionate educator. She received a Master of Arts in English from Wayne State University in 2017 and three Bachelor of Arts from Grand Valley State University in Dance, English, and Writing in 2014. Ari received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College in 2023, which was supported by the Rona Jaffe Foundation Graduate Fellowship.  Ari was awarded a Centrum Artist Residency in 2022 and most recently, was a finalist for the 2023 Global Poetry Prize from Frontier Poetry. She lives with her husband in Traverse City on the ancestral and unceded land of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Pottawatomie people, The People of the Three Fires.
