What you are supporting

National Writers Series

The NWS, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to hosting meaningful conversations with the best —as well as emerging literary — talent today. We want to move our audiences toward a greater understanding of issues and ways of life that exist within and beyond our current boundaries. We are “raising writers” by helping students to think critically, express themselves, develop their imaginations, and explore the world.

Raising Writers Programs

Front Street Writers is a free, rigorous program for aspiring high school writers. Students are often treated to visits by our main-stage authors who share invaluable writing and career advice. Visiting writers have included Pulitzer Prize winner David Maraniss, international photojournalist Paola Gianturco, NYT bestselling thriller writer Kyle Mills, award-winning journalist Daniel Bergner, ABC correspondent and author John Donvan, NYT bestseller Beth Macy, and Pushcart Prize Winner Eric Fair, who with Major General Michael Lehnert, talked to students about 9/11 and Abu Ghraib. Culinary legend Alice Waters, former Esquire editor Terry McDonell, and New York Times bestselling author Doug Stanton also have visited students.

The year-long FSW course is taught at the Career Tech Center, which covers a five-county district. Many students are bused in from rural areas where creative writing isn’t taught. Some 200 students have completed the FSW program. Many of our graduates have won awards and scholarships and all have published their work in the NWS Literary Journal. Second-year students can put their writing skills to work, thanks to the Career Tech’s internship program.

In the spring of 2017, our Poetry Workshop began at Traverse Heights Elementary, with fourth- and fifth-graders taking part in poetry workshops taught by short story writer Luke Dani Blue.

The program is intended to give “voice” to all students, including those at-risk. At the workshop’s conclusion, students shared their poems with other students and took home a journal of their work.

In spring 2019, Traverse Heights Elementary and Blair Elementary fourth- and fifth-graders took part in a series of three poetry workshops taught by playwright Samantha Collier with the help of several volunteers. These workshops introduce children to the art of poetry and a new way of expressing themselves. At the conclusion of the workshops, each student recited his or her poem in front of the class. They also took home a classroom journal that compiled all their poems.

Launched in 2016, Battle of the Books is a free, book-based quiz competition for fourth- and fifth-graders within the boundaries of Grand Traverse County, the Traverse City Area Public Schools school district, the Elk Rapids School District, the Forest Area Schools Community Schools school district, Leelanau County, and Benzie County.

Our successful debut “battle” involved 135 students and culminated with a talk by bestselling author. In 2017, the Battle doubled in size and hosted Gordon Korman, publisher of 85 children’s books!

Our fifth season promises to be just as exciting. This is one of the few events where you’ll see readers getting enthusiastic applause for their reading and memory achievements.

National Writers Series offers summer and fall youth creative writing classes in partnership with Northwestern Michigan College. This is a partnership built on synergy! NWS crafts and promotes the classes, taking advantage of its network of kids, writers and teachers; NMC offers the courses through its popular College for Kids catalog.

Offered in collaboration with the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation, NWS awards three scholarships each year in a writing competition that is judged “blind.” To date, 30 students have received $48,000 in scholarship money. In the last three years, students in the Front Street Writers program have swept the contest in all three genres: fiction, poetry and non-fiction.

Donation Opportunities

Keep the Conversation Going with an NWS Membership

The NWS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the Grand Traverse area with the best and brightest literary talent today. Plus, NWS works diligently to raise the next generation of writers by offering numerous educational opportunities and college scholarships to area youth – elementary through high school.

Yes, a good portion of our programming is supported by event ticket sales but we still need your charitable support to bridge the gap (about 20% of our operating budget relies on your donation dollars). A NWS membership of any level helps tremendously.
