The Director of Marketing and Communications, first and foremost, needs to fill seats for both our year-round author events and creative writing classes. Both are livestream and in person.
She or he needs to be an excellent writer, who can deliver smart, punchy, persuasive, and error- free messaging to our audience. She or he will also be on the lookout for new ways to get the word out of our events and creative writing classes to our local, regional and national audiences. The marketing director will need to provide analyses on marketing investments that are most cost-effective.
This person will be working with and in support of Pulitzer Prize-winning authors, bestselling writers, internationally recognized journalists and others, so coming in with a love of reading and writing is a must.
The marketing director’s main goal is to successfully market and promote NWS in-person and virtual author events to local, regional and national audiences through owned, earned and paid media. We are looking to build our livestream attendance nationally.
The director is also responsible for promoting our Raising Writers youth programs, which include Battle of the Books, scholarship awards, and creative writing workshops.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Create and execute marketing plans/strategies for each author event and Raising Writers class. Write copy for all email campaigns, social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, and LinkedIn), press releases, event pages on website, radio advertising, and others as necessary.
- Write copy and work with graphic designer to create posters, seasonal program guide, print ads, brochures and others. Proficiency with Mailchimp, Canva and all social platforms (including Facebook Business Manager) is required.
- Secure author interviews with print, radio and TV media (this role may require you to do media interviews when needed).
- Help put together an annual marketing budget and track expenses.
- Download events to YouTube immediately the day after the event. Also, manage downloads to Podcasts and release to Friends of NWS.
- Build and maintain ticket sale pages for all livestream/virtual events.
- Oversee elements for pre-event video (and others), write the voice-over, and serve as a liaison with the City Opera House for video deliverables.
- Manage listings in local event calendars for all events. (In the event we have an intern, you can give this job to them.
- Respond to relevant customer/audience for Ticket Tailor and website issues.
- Write and load event copy for the NWS website, City Opera House website, and Ticket Tailor.
- Participate in NWS committee meetings including: author/event planning,website rebuild, and livestream.
- Audio/video skills including podcast production, livestream management (including Zoom webinar and YouTube Studio) and video editing.
- Help facilitate events with the event coordinator. Consult with education director on promotion of Raising Writers classes and workshops and Battle of the Books.
- Brainstorm ideas for author receptions and Friends gatherings and help execute.
- The marketing director is also responsible for assisting the Director in refining fundraising emails, both email and print.
The starting salary is $26 to $30 per hour, depending on experience. Your wage will average 25 hours per week but can go as high as 32 hours per week during peak times. This part-time position provides flexible time off, and you will be paid for an extra day during a holiday week. NWS will also pay your normal hours between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day—a week during which NWS closes down.

The National Writers Series of Traverse City is looking for dynamic, experienced, and outgoing teachers for various creative writing classes. Our Raising Writers program offers free creative writing classes to area youth and serves students from fourth through twelfth grade. Raising Writers provides writing classes across many disciplines, including fiction, creative nonfiction, journalism, poetry, playwriting, Moth-style storytelling, improv, and college essay workshops.
The ideal candidate for this position is a published writer and/or has an MFA or other graduate degree in a related field, as well as strong teaching experience. We are seeking teachers across multiple writing disciplines, who are highly organized and experienced managing a classroom, devising lesson plans, as well as recording and reporting on their hours. Teachers are also required to participate in aggregating and editing student work to be published in our literary journal.
Responsibilities include coordinating with the education director, building lesson plans that reflect the mission of Raising Writers, communicating with parents and students, and providing students with valuable craft techniques.
Raising Writers teachers have the flexibility to devise courses that fit their schedules. Teachers are paid $75/hour for contact hours, and $30/hour for prep hours. Please email [email protected] with a cover letter and resume.
