From staples to stickers, punk rock to poetry: zines, short for both fanzines and magazines, can be made from anything, about anything. In this pop-up class, students will learn a quick overview behind the beautiful and inspiring background of both the zine making process and history, then have the opportunity to craft their own. Students’ zines will be mass printed to share and collect as means to build community through story building and self expression, as well as being published in 2027 edition of the National Writers Series Literary Journal. Remember: the only rule of zine making is that there is no rules!

About:

Tess Tarchak-Hiss

Tess Tarchak-Hiss is going into her freshman year at Scripps College in the Claremont Consortium to study English and Media Studies and hopes to be a screenwriter in Los Angeles. She has taken a plethora of creative writing classes through the National Writers Series, participated in Battle of the Books, is founder and president of the National Writers Series Youth Board, is a current board member, and won the first-place Judith Lang Scholarship for journalism two years in a row. Tess was also editor-in-chief of her highschool newspaper The Occidentalist and frequently writes both comedy sketches for shorts and articles for the Northern Express. Tess has been making zines since she read The First Rule of Punk for Battle of the Books in fifth grade, and hopes to inspire others how the main character inspired her.
