This class will ask us to think like naturalists discovering various poems for the first time. Instead of “understanding” a poem, we will instead closely observe what’s there on the page, take notes, and think about how the various parts (diction, image, metaphor, line, etc.) work together (or against each other) to form the whole. We will also practice writing our own poems using the things we learn through a series of playful prompts and exercises. We will discover rules, break rules, make mistakes, and learn to think like poets.

All enrolled students will have the opportunity to publish work in the 2025 issue of the National Writers Series’ Literary Journal.
