Sirens at Moonrise

Robert and Marcy Branski Poetry Scholarship – Poetry

Kendra Couturier

Lake Leelanau St. Mary – 12th Grade

a bird slices through the dome in the half-dark and, distant,
sirens at moonrise.

breaking news broken news broken glass

and, somehow,
violins and cellos and piano notes on high spilling out on the grass.

all I ever wanted was another butterfly year, a hope,
but instead, I’m reconciling futures with the fate of birds against glass,
dreaming in reverse.
