PRESS RELEASE: Announcing “An Evening with Emily Henry”

June 15, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

#1 Best-Selling Author Emily Henry joins the National Writers Series on Thursday, June 24

The National Writers Series of Traverse City takes the 2021 Summer Season on a sunny holiday with People We Meet on Vacation by best-selling author Emily Henry.

Critical praise is already pouring in for the book, which debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list just two weeks ago. The Washington Post calls it “a pitch-perfect beach read” while Parade says it’s “a smart, hilarious and tender read [that will] most certainly … have you pining for travel.”

The book was also named a “Most Anticipated Book of 2021” by Newsweek, Oprah Magazine, Marie Claire, Good Housekeeping, and more.

People We Meet on Vacation tells the story of two friends—Poppy and Alex—who have nothing in common, and for most of the year they live far apart…but every summer, for a decade, they’ve taken one glorious week of vacation together. Until two years ago, when they ruined everything.

They haven’t spoken since.

What could possibly go wrong when Poppy convinces Alex to take one more vacation together … and tries to get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship?

If this is giving you some serious rom-com, Meg Ryan/Billy Crystal energy, you’re not alone. Kirkus Reviews says the book is “a warm and winning ‘When Harry Met Sally’ update that hits all the perfect notes.”

Henry is no stranger to Michigan: She studied creative writing at Hope College and her breakout hit, Beach Read, was set in the quaint lakefront town of North Bear Shores. That town’s fictional geography was inspired by Holland and Saugatuck (but we can’t help but see a little Traverse City in there too).

Emily Henry joins the National Writers Series on Thursday, June 24 at 7 p.m. ET. This event is free (though a $10 donation is suggested), and registration is open at the National Writers Series website. The event takes place over Zoom and attendees will be sent a link at registration.

Our guest host for this event will be Brittany Cavallaro, the New York Times bestselling author of the Charlotte Holmes novels and a creative writing instructor at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan.

Media interested in requesting a copy of the book or in scheduling an interview with Emily Henry are invited to connect directly with Danielle Keir or Dache Rogers at Penguin Random House.

About the National Writers Series

The National Writers Series is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging world-renowned authors in meaningful conversations. Since 2010, NWS has hosted nearly 200 authors, including luminaries like Margaret Atwood, Alice Walker, Mary Doria Russell, Scott Turow, and Gillian Flynn.

Over 70,000 people have attended our events throughout the years, and we’ve helped sell over 18,000 books through local bookstores. Our events are traditionally held at the historic City Opera House in Traverse City, though we have continued the conversation via virtual events on Zoom since April 2020.

Our author events fuel our Raising Writers programs, which help students express themselves, explore the world through reading, develop their imaginations, and think critically. Learn more at nationalwritersseries.org.
