“A Thrilling Tour of Non-Human Perception” – The New York Times

Join us in a conversation with author Ed Yong, a science writer who won several honors for his reporting on the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory reporting and the George Polk Award for science reporting. NWS welcomes him to present his newest book, An Immense World.

Funny and suffused with the joy of discovery, An Immense World takes readers on a tour of the radically different ways that animals perceive the world, reminding us of what Marcel Proust once called “the only true voyage . . . not to visit strange lands, but to possess other eyes.”

The Earth literally teems with sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, sights and textures, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal (including us) is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble and perceives but a tiny sliver of our immense world. A crocodile’s scaly face is as sensitive as a lover’s fingertips and the eyes of a giant squid evolved to see sparkling whales. Readers will learn what bees see in flowers, what songbirds hear in their tunes, and what dogs smell on the street.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with live music and a cash bar. The event begins at 7 p.m. and includes time for audience questions at the end. Each ticket comes with a signed, softcover book (or you can opt for a two-ticket package with one book). Ed will sign books before the event and personalize them after the stage conversation.
