Have you ever been reading a fantasy novel and thought, I want to do that? Or maybe you’re already working on your own stories, and you’d like to learn how to do it better? Or maybe you just want to spend time with people who are also interested in books and writing? If so, this class is for you. In this 8- week workshop, participants will write at least one piece of fiction, inspired by our study of fantasy fiction and magic realism. We will learn about the four different types of fantasy stories (portal-quest, immersive, intrusion, and liminal) and how the introduction of magic changes the way a story impacts its reader. Finally, we will learn how to give positive and useful feedback to your fellow writers.

All enrolled students will have the opportunity to publish work in the 2025 issue of the National Writers Series’ literary journal.
