Writing the College Winning Essay **Virtual**

In this virtual workshop, Ari Mokdad will provide a short presentation on what colleges look for in an essay, give students necessary college essay writing tips, and provide successful sample essays for students to review. The instructor will lead the students in writing exercises with the intention of giving them the tools to go home and complete a draft college application essay. Students will have the option of emailing Ari their completed draft and scheduling a one-on-one Zoom meeting with her to discuss their essay (essays must be submitted to the instructor by the specified October deadline provided in class).

Students are asked to bring a pen/pencil, as well as any drafting they have done of their college essay so far. Laptops are optional, as notebooks will be provided.

Registration closes when the maximum number of students (20) register, or by September 20, 2022. A wait list may be available. Registration is open to students throughout northern Michigan.

About: Ari Mokdad

Ari Mokdad is an educator and writer living in Traverse City. She holds BAs from Grand Valley State University in English/Linguistics, Writing, and Dance; an MA in English from Wayne State University with doctoral studies in composition and rhetoric; and is pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College. She has worked in the writing labs and taught courses for Wayne State University, Northwestern Michigan College, Grand Valley State University, and the Dance Center of Traverse City.

Ari’s embodied lyric essay, titled “Body Studies: Arabets” was published in Elemental: A Collection of Michigan Creative Nonfiction, which was the recipient of the 2019 Michigan Notable Book Award. She is the recipient of the 2020 Rona Jaffe Foundation Graduate Fellowship and was awarded the 2021 Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Grant for her forthcoming performance When Water Moves.
