What makes a poem? Experiment with poetic form and limits. In this course, students will be introduced to new and experimental forms of poetry such as the duplex, poem comics, erasure, the American sonnet, and list poems. Participants will be encouraged to pursue their own interests in a variety of topics, while trying on the best containers for their ideas. Curiosity and imagination will serve as the foundation for our work together. Offered in partnership with the National Writers Series
About: Lauren K Carlson
Lauren K. Carlson is a poet and spiritual director living in Manistee, Michigan. Her chapbook Animals I Have Killed won Comstock Review’s Chapbook Prize (2018). Her work has recently appeared in Crab Creek Review, Salamander Magazine, Terrain, The Windhover and Waxwing. In 2022 she won the Levis Stipend from Friends of Writers for her manuscript in progress. Her writing has been supported by Tin House, Napa Valley Writers’ Conference, Sewanee Writers’ Conference, the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council and Artplace America. She currently serves as editor for Tinderbox Poetry Journal and holds an MFA in poetry from the Warren Wilson MFA Program for Writers.
