In Make Your Own Holiday class, students will get creative and make a new tradition to celebrate with friends and family. Together, we’ll look at holidays from around the world and learn what values, stories, and rituals are important to the people who celebrate them! Then, we’ll dream up own holidays, complete with the values behind the holiday, the story or myth the holiday comes from, and all the ways to celebrate the holiday! Is there an exciting character or mythical creature involved? A special dance we do, or delicious food we eat, or songs we sing? Our imaginations are the limit! During our final class, we’ll invite our friends and family to join us and celebrate with us!
It’s the holiday season- why not add one more?
All students who participate in the class will have the opportunity to have their work published in the National Writers Series 2027 Literary Journal.
Audrey Irontree is the education director for the National Writers Series, and is a fiction writer, developmental editor, ghostwriter and educator. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Fiction degree from Northwestern University, her Bachelor of Arts from Brown University and her Associate Degree from The Bard College at Simon’s Rock.
Her short story, “Alligator,” is a runner-up for The 2025 Adrift Short Story Contest and is forthcoming shortly from Driftwood Press. Her story, “The Toad” recently appeared in the Portland Review, and “Koan” was featured in Meridian, University of Virginia’s literary journal. She lives in Traverse City, where she spends her time reading, or with her horse, or making slow but steady progress on a draft of a novel! She loves teaching, animals, and being creative.
