Anna Quindlen is a novelist and journalist whose work has appeared on fiction, nonfiction, and self-help bestseller lists. She is the author of many novels: Object Lessons, One True Thing, Black and Blue, Blessings, Rise and Shine, Every Last OneStill Life with Bread Crumbs, and Miller’s Valley.

Alice Wong (she/her) is a disabled activist, writer, editor, media maker, and consultant. Alice is the founder and director of the Disability Visibility Project, an online community dedicated to creating, sharing, and amplifying disability media and culture. She has been published in the New York Times, Vox, Radiolab, Bitch Media, Teen Vogue, and many others.

Currently, Alice is the editor of Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the Twenty-First Century, an anthology of essays by disabled people, and Disability Visibility: 17 First-Person Stories for Today, an adapted version for young adults. Her debut memoir, Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life will be available on September 6, 2022 from Vintage Books.

Stephanie Foo is the author of What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex TraumaShe has written for Vox, The New York Times and The Atlantic. She worked as a radio producer for This American Life and Snap Judgment, and her stories aired on Reply All, 99% Invisible, Radiolab.

A noted speaker and instructor, she has taught at Columbia University and has spoken at venues from Sundance Film Festival to the Missouri Department of Mental Health.

Dr. Benjamin Gilmer is a family physician and Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and Mountain Area Health Education Center’s (MAHEC) Family Medicine Residency Program.  As the Medical Director for MAHEC’s Rural Health Initiative and Rural Fellowship, he is passionate about advocating for global and rural health disparities. His advocacy work currently focuses on bringing media attention to the social injustice of mass incarceration.

His book, The Other Dr. Gilmer (Ballantine/Penguin Random House) and feature film project (Concordia Films) both highlight the injustice of mass incarceration of people with mental illness. Both projects are based on a 2013 This American Life podcast (Dr. Gilmer and Mr. Hyde), a collaboration between Benjamin and Sarah Koenig (“Serial”) which has had more than 10 million listeners. Jerry Dennis has lived most of his life in northern Michigan and has earned his living as an independent writer since 1986. His essays, poems, and short fiction have appeared in more than 100 publications, including The New York Times, Smithsonian, Audubon,  American Way, Gray’s Sporting Journal, and others. Jerry has been awarded many honors, including the Michigan Author of the Year Award and the Great Lakes Culture Award from Michigan State University. He is on the permanent faculty of the University of Michigan’s Bear River Writers Conference, where he teaches creative non-fiction and the sense of place. He and his wife, Gail, live near the shore of Lake Michigan not far from Traverse City, Michigan.

Dave Dempsey has helped shape conservation and Great Lakes policy for 30 years and is an author and co-author of six conservation books. He is currently a policy advisor for FLOW, a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to protecting Great Lakes waters using the public trust doctrine. He has served more than thirty-five years in environmental policy, including positions with the Michigan Environmental Council, International Joint Commission, and Great Lakes Fishery Commission. In 2009, the Michigan Center for the Book, the Michigan Library Association and Sleeping Bear Press gave Dave the annual Michigan Author Award.
