Playwriting Fall 2024

Date:  Thursdays, 9/12, 9/19, 9/26

Format:  Online via Zoom (which will be sent the week of class)

Time:  4:00-5:30

Grade Level: High Schoolers grades 9-12

In this online course, students will learn the fundamentals of playwriting, from creating characters to crafting dialogue. We will read and discuss a variety of scenes to understand the unique possibilities of dramatic writing, and then students will put those observations into practice by writing and workshopping their own short plays.

About: Sam Collier

Sam Collier is a playwright, theater artist, and scholar. Her play A Hundred Circling Camps, which explores the history of American protest camps, was produced by Dogteam Theatre Project at Atlantic Stage 2 in 2024. Her other plays include Daisy Violet the Bitch Beast KingSilo Tree, and thing with feathers. Sam has taught playwriting for students of all ages, including with Front Street Writers, Interlochen Arts Camp, the Iowa Young Writers Project, and Cornell College. She holds an MFA in playwriting from the University of Iowa and is a PhD Candidate at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she studies theater about climate change. She co-hosts, with Sarah Cho, the playwriting podcast Beckett’s Babies.
