PRESS RELEASE: An Evening with Susie Yang

July 26, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Theft, Lies, Immigration and Love:
The National Writers Series presents
“An Evening with Susie Yang”
on August 5th

Author Susie Yang joins the National Writers Series on August 5th to discuss her breakout hit novel, White Ivy.

Named one of the Best Books of 2020 by USA Today and longlisted for the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize, this New York Times bestselling novel is filled with surprising twists and a nuanced exploration of class and race.

White Ivy is the first book by Yang, who was born in China and came to the United States as a child. After receiving her doctorate of pharmacy from Rutgers, she launched a tech startup in San Francisco that has taught 20,000 people how to code.

The novel was also a Read with Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick and listed as one of the Most Anticipated Books by Entertainment Weekly, O Magazine, Time Magazine, Glamour, Vogue, and Buzzfeed.

Bustle describes White Ivy wonderfully as “The Talented Mr. Ripley for the Instagram Age” while The Washington Post called the book “a highly entertaining, well-plotted character study.” Shonda Rimes is also reportedly developing the book for Netflix—could this be the basis for the next Bridgerton

Our guest host for this event will be award-winning NPR journalist, best-selling author, and previous NWS author Aarti Shahani. She is the creator and host of Art of Power (co-produced by WBEZ Chicago), a weekly podcast featuring fascinating people who’ve done big things.

Susie Yang joins the National Writers Series for a virtual event on August 5th at 7 p.m. ET. This event is free (though a $10 donation is suggested), and registration is open at the National Writers Series website. The event takes place over Zoom and attendees will be sent a link at registration.

About the National Writers Series

The National Writers Series is a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging world-renowned authors in meaningful conversations. Since 2010, NWS has hosted nearly 200 authors, including luminaries like Margaret Atwood, Alice Walker, Mary Doria Russell, Scott Turow, and Gillian Flynn.

Over 70,000 people have attended our events throughout the years, and we’ve helped sell over 18,000 books through local bookstores. Our live events take place at the historic City Opera House in Traverse City, while our virtual events are available around the world via Zoom or YouTube live-streaming.

Our author events fuel our Raising Writers programs, which help students express themselves, explore the world through reading, develop their imaginations, and think critically. Learn more at nationalwritersseries.org.
