Area 4th and 5th graders who love to read—and parents, of course!—will compete in the final Battle of the Books Grand Traverse Competition on Sunday, March 19.
The Battle of the Books is a book-based quiz competition open to all 4th and 5th graders living in the Grand Traverse region. Kids prepare by reading pre-selected stories together in small teams of 4-6 over the course of several weeks and then engaged in a competition on March 11 at Northwestern Michigan Community College. Four semi-finalist teams emerged from the competition to compete in the final battle on March 19 at the City Opera House. The winning team will be presented with the grand prize—trophies presented by a “mystery guest” (Think: a New York Times best-selling author) and then be whisked away in a limo for a Victory VIP Tour.
“This is a terrific program that gives talented young readers a way to engage with other kids who love reading,” said Anne Stanton, executive director of the National Writers Series. “Last year, when we first introduced Battle of the Books, we were flooded with teams but could only accept twenty-four. So this year, we plan to double the number of teams. Thanks to our generous sponsors, the event and books are free to all the kids who want to participate.”
The information session will give parents a chance to learn more about the Battle of the Books and tips on how to form a team for the guaranteed 48 spaces available. Teams can begin registration on November 10 on a first-come, first-served basis. Each team will be required to have a parent or volunteer “coach” to help students prepare for the competition. Once registered, each team will receive a free set of books in December to help them prepare for the competition.
Battle of the Books Grand Traverse is free for all participants and is a great opportunity for 4th and 5th grade students to read together, learn together, and dream together. It’s also a fun way to stay engaged during the cold Michigan winters!
